Elementary schools host DARE graduations
Fifth graders at Elm Creek, Fernbrook and Rice Lake elementary schools recently celebrated their graduation from the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. DARE is a drug abuse prevention education program intended to give elementary school children skills to resist peer pressure to use tobacco, drugs and alcohol.
The ceremonies, attended by parent/caregivers and community members, included a welcome from Maple Grove Police Department DARE officers Smith and Slawson, a message from the principal about all they have accomplished and a message from Maple Grove Police Department Chief Eric Werner or Acting Commander Matt Brost.
Families and students then heard from one student from each class, who read their personal statement about taking a stand, what they have learned in DARE and what lesson they will bring with them into middle school next year. Students watched a video slideshow with photos from their different lessons throughout the school year created by officers Smith and Slawson, before being presented with a certificate for their achievement.
